Jemima, first-time mum - a homebirth

Jemima attended some Birthtalk Antenatal sessions as part of her preparation for a homebirth.

Birth Notice
Danny and I are super happy and proud to announce the birth of baby Conner Daniel. Conner was born a couple of weeks early, on the 17.1.08 on our back deck in the early hours of the morning with our wonderful midwife and our Doula in attendance.

Conner is beautiful, content and much loved and I am so pleased that my home birth worked out so well, despite me being totally unprepared for an early arrival! Danny (husband) is now a home birth convert and says that next time we will be doing it the same way.

Coming to Birthtalk
I came to Birthtalk meetings because I had heard many positive things about them from other people. I liked the topics that were offered which were different to what one gets through the hospital. I have been gaining confidence about my birthing body for a number of years as I worked with a group of very competent midwives who believed in women's birthing bodies. Before my birth and during my birth I felt very capable and confident I could do it. I went to Birthtalk meetings with my family because I wanted them to learn to be more confident about birth - and my birthing body in particular.

Support People
I really found it useful to have my mother-in-law there with my husband to hear about what support they could provide during birth. I especially liked that they heard things like - don't have bad breath at the birth, don't talk during a contraction, minimise other noises that could be distracting. This helped give my husband something 'to do' at birth and he did a great job on himself.

The weeks afterwards
Since the birth, I am more confident about myself and have had an easy /smooth journey into parenthood. Having a home birth has changed my husband more than ever - he is more confident in us and has overcome his fear of birth. I recommend Birthtalk to women and their support people - partners and the women close to them in their lives -(because it is often our mother’s and sister’s opinions about birth that influence our own opinion about our birthing body) . I think it is helpful to educate our partners and the women in our lives that birth is do-able naturally and that we have much influence over what happens in our birth. It is their support and their belief in our birthing body that will help women birth naturally and help them birth with a feeling of empowerment. I am hoping to bring my sister along for a Birthtalk meeting sometime over the next few months. She is newly pregnant and she has attended one meeting with me in the past.
